The Summer Sunflower Project is an engaging educational initiative designed to inspire kids to explore the world of sunflowers through hands-on gardening, observation and creative expression.
Our project is part of our broader STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) program, aimed at fostering a love for learning in a fun and interactive way.
Activities take place in-person the garden, in-studio and other activities take place through self-study at the child’s home.
In-Person June 8, 22, July 6 and July 20.
What We Do:
Growing: Each participant will receive sunflower seeds to plant and nurture over the summer. Children learn about the life cycle of plants, the importance of sunlight, water, and soil, and the fascinating characteristics of sunflowers.
Charting: Children will maintain a unique growth chart for their sunflowers, recording height, number of leaves and other observations. This activity helps develop skills in data collection, analysis and scientific thinking.
Creating: Throughout the summer, children will engage in at least 10 sunflower-themed projects and crafts. From making sunflower art to exploring the geometry of sunflower seeds, these activities blend creativity with learning.
CONTEST
At the end of the season, we'll host a friendly competition with prizes for the tallest sunflower and the widest sunflower bloom. It's a great way to motivate and reward the children's hard work and dedication.
Date: TBA based on blooms.
HARVEST DINNER
To celebrate the culmination of our project, we will host a special harvest dinner. This event will feature sunflower-inspired dishes, fun games and a showcase of the children's achievements.
Date: TBA based on blooms.
Join Us!
We invite children ages 8-12 to participate in the Summer Sunflower Project. If your child is younger or older, please reach out.
This is a fantastic way to spend the summer, combining outdoor activity, scientific exploration and creative expression. Whether you're a budding scientist, an aspiring artist, or just love sunflowers, there's something in this project for your child.
Participation Fee
To cover the cost of materials, prizes and the harvest dinner, there is a participation fee of $35 per child. This fee ensures that we can provide the best possible experience for all participants.
Most activities will take place in the garden, others in the art studio. Parents are welcome to leave the child during workshop activities or wait for the child.
