Basket weaving

Fruit basket

Sure, I get out and about in the community and have a class or two outside of my own studio. This afternoon I spent the day basket weaving with Jeannie Sisson and a great group of ladies (a one gentleman).

It was a lot of fun! I’m completely new to basket weaving and was pleasantly surprised at the “not so difficult” process.

I say, “not so difficult” because I don’t want to convey that the craft doesn’t require a lot of skill-it does-but it’s not so difficult that you can’t learn basic techniques relatively fast.

The actual weaving process involved basic “tabby” and twining-just as in tapestry weaving. So because I weave-I didn’t need to get up over that learning curve.

The basket sits on a wooden base and is made of reed in different colors, type and size.

The miracle of the basket is that the base is completely round and begins with 24 spokes inserted into the base, but after the basket is complete-the shape is oval, including a curving (up and down) rim.

Nice!

It was definitely a nice way to spend the afternoon.

Great learning experience. #learnmore
