A message to the art snob
I was talking to an “art snob” about fiber art. Fiber art isn’t “art”, she said. This coming from someone that doesn’t do anything “artistic” that I’m aware of at all. These types of people aren’t afraid of voicing their opinions-out loud. Which is exactly why I don’t mind voicing mine out loud.
“Good thing you don’t think for others,” I replied.
Silence. If you want to have a constructive conversation, I’m up for it. But, deconstructive rhetoric I shut down right away.
I’m a gracious defender.
This is why people have heard me say, and I stand fiercely by this sentiment, art should be a non-judgmental and competition-free zone. And when stepping into my zones you have to embrace this philosophy or “step off” and stay away.
There are people, artists, that are “afraid” of participating in art shows and vendor shows-simply because they’re afraid of being judged and ridiculed by others.
To avoid becoming an art snob and learn how to embrace the creativity of others, it's essential to cultivate an open and inclusive mindset. First and foremost, let go of any preconceived notions of what art should be. And that YOU have the right to say what it is and isn’t for others.
Sure, saying “fiber art isn’t an art” can very well be a rightful personal opinion. But trust, the comment was meant to be a slight.
Art is subjective and different forms of expression resonate with different individuals. For example, personally, I’m very fond of book arts-binding, paper making and creative bookmaking. BUT, I’m not fond of “junk journaling” or “scrapbooking”. It doesn’t mean it’s not art and that others don’t believe it is and don’t enjoy making it, buying it, selling it and receiving it.
It’s art.
Each page of a junk journal is an invitation to embark on a sensory experience. The mishmash of random scraps, vintage ephemera and personal mementos take on a wondrous transformation within their pages. Once ordinary and overlooked items are transcended from their beginnings to become intricate work. Junking and its eclectic charm, captures the essence of creativity and self-expression. Within the pages of a junk journal a world unfolds that extends beyond the aesthetic appeal. Junk journals serve as a celebration of imperfections and embracement of the creative uniqueness of the maker.
Actually, that’s pretty damn artistic and pretty bold in a world that often demands flawlessness from art snobs and from those that don’t know better.
A long time ago, what I began doing was rather than dismissing or belittling art styles or genres that may not align with my personal taste, I began making an effort to understand the artist's intention and the message they were conveying in what it is they do.
Embrace the diversity within the art world and recognize that every artist brings a unique voice and perspective. Be generous with your appreciation and encouragement. Celebrate the creativity of others by acknowledging the effort and passion that goes into their work, regardless of whether it aligns with your own preferences. Who are you to judge?
By adopting an inclusive mindset, we can create an environment where artistic expression flourishes and everyone's creativity is respected and valued.
Give yourself and others grace.
